What is PingPoint?

Every club player knows the moment. Long rally, good point, and then someone says: "wait — was that 7–6, or 8–6?" Nobody is quite sure. You replay it, or you guess, and something small gets lost.

PingPoint started there and also with my inability to keep srcore properly.

PingPoint at its core it is a scorekeeping app for table tennis players. You play, it counts, and the match is recorded properly.

What makes it different is what sits underneath. Most scorekeepers are a single screen on a single phone — handy for ten minutes and forgotten by the time you pack up. PingPoint is built on a real platform with cloud sync, so a match is not trapped on the device that recorded it.

Scoring without picking up your phone

Tapping a phone between points is awkward, so there is a physical side to this:

  • a button you press to score, instead of reaching for a screen
  • a net mount that holds your phone at the end of the table at a sensible angle
  • a magnetic button holder that fixes the button to the table, right where your hand already is

The app also runs on your smartwatch. If you already wear one, the score is a tap on your wrist — nothing extra to buy, nothing to set up.

None of it is required. But once scoring is off the phone, it stops being something you think about.

Not just a scoreboard

Table tennis is a social game, and the app is built that way. There are leaderboards, messaging, and profiles for both players and coaches. There is a map to find clubs and venues near you, so turning up somewhere new is less of a guess.

Getting the score off your phone

There is also a streaming view. It reads the same live data and puts the score on a second screen — a tablet propped at the end of the table, or a TV on the wall — so everyone watching can see where the match stands without leaning over someone's phone.

What comes next

The next step is for clubs and venues. Rather than setting a screen up yourself, the club runs it: the match is already on the TV, and anyone can scan the QR code on screen to join it straight away. No install, no setup, no borrowing the club tablet.

For now, though, the important part is the simple one. You should be able to finish a rally and know the score.
